The Elephant Speaks
One Man’s Elephant book II

Enemy to Friend

And God Speaks to me,

          “Love your enemy.

You are in a place where there is good and there is evil.

I am in a place where there is good and there is evil.

What you see as good is not always what I see as good.

What you see as evil is not always what I see as evil.

Your place is far from my place,

While you are in your place and I am in my place,

            we cannot talk.

There is another place.

Where what you see as good, I see as good.

Where what you see as evil, I see as evil.

If we both go to that place,

            We can sit and talk.

We do not need to be enemies.

            We might even be friends.

You might stop that which you see as good and I see as evil.

I might stop that which I see as good and you see as evil.

For we cannot harm a friend.

We will spend long years

            Sitting,

            talking,

drinking weak tea or strong coffee.

When time is short for one of us,

            We will come together,

One will take the hand of the other.

            We will both say,

“Good bye, old friend, I’ll see you later.”

And we will go without fear.

For we leave behind a friend

            To watch over our grandchildren.
