THE GREAT SPIRIT

O.K. Just what is your view of God if not The Great Spirit? Native Americans believed that all life, all creation, all order comes from The Great Spirit. Isn’t that a beautiful definition of God?

Native Americans also believed that each animal has a spirit. Even the trees and plants have a spirit. Therefore, when killing for food, you have the responsibility to thank that animal for its life and honor its spirit. Killing must be quick, clean, and painless. A Jew who is a butcher also is required to use a sharp, clean knife and make the kill as quick, clean, and painless as possible. Even a prayer is required. God gave both peoples the same message about living things. When the same message is given to different peoples in different ways, perhaps we should pay attention. Why don’t we?
